Get Your Message Noticed

I feel like every message I write to people I’m interested online has been written before. What can I do to make my messages unique?
Sandra, 32, Oakville

Well Sandra, if you’re looking to  get your message noticed, it’s not so much the uniqueness of the content as it is how engaging what you’re saying is coming across.

What do we mean by that? Let’s break it down:

If you want to get someones attention by letting them know you have an interesting career, it’s not enough to flat out say that. You need to get that message across in a way that makes you seem like you would be a fun date.

If someone were to say, “I write scripts for television shows,” it’s cool, but it’s not enough to engage someone. But if someone were to say, “I saw that you listed Lost as a favorite television show on your profile. I actually work along side one of the former writers of that show on a new series, Once Upon A Time. Have you heard of it?” That not only lets them know that you’ve taken the time to read their profiles, but invites them to continue the conversation.

Now, you may not be the writer of a television show, but that doesn’t mean that your job isn’t interesting enough to start an engaging conversation about.

If you don’t want to talk shop with your potential match, you can be just as engaging while using questions to stimulate a response. Check out the graphic above to see the most successful ways to start conversations through messaging!
