Ten Fun Tidbits About Kissing

Putting your mouth on another human’s mouth and touching tongues is somehow insanely pleasurable. We should know more about it. And since it’s our job in the online personals community to be informed about all things sex and romance, we’ve got a list of fun facts and historical tidbits about locking lips that you can use to impress your next online date :

1. The word “kiss” is from the German “kussjan.” Huh.

2. On average, a person spends fifteen days of his or her life kissing.

3. You wouldn’t think it , but smooching actually burns 26 calories a minute. That’s  a lot – if you could sustain that for an hour you’d be in damn fine shape.

4. Kissing affects hormones. An innocent kiss on the cheek can actually raise your hormone levels.

5. So we call a tongue kiss a French kiss, but the French term for a tongues kiss is “roulant un pelle,” which means “rolling a shovel.” Hmm…not as lovely sounding as I’d like.

6. In 16th century Naples, public kissing was punishable by death.  A little harsh maybe, but if I see people getting all sloppy about it in public even now I get tempted to deal out some punishment.

7. First on-screen same-sex kiss: two women in Cecil B. Demille’s 1922 silent film entitled “Manslaughter.”

8. Shit. This one’s good: Minnesotan Alfred Wolfman holds the world record for kissing the most people in the world; in 1990, he kissed 8001 people in eight hours. I wonder if he got sick.

9. College dudes Matt Daley and Bobby Canciello broke the world record for longest kiss last year with a near 33 hours of locking lips.

10. One kiss with tongue can actually pass along 278 types of bacteria. Ugh. Dirty.
